Answer to Question 1

Answer: A new patient is one who has NOT received any professional services from the physician, or another physician of the same specialty who belongs to the same group practice, within the past 3 years. An established patient has received services under these conditions.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Observation status applies to a patient who is in the hospital to be observed to determine if he or she should be admitted, transferred to another facility, or sent home.
