Answer to Question 1

Photons are used to treat more superficial areas and can penetrate 1 - 6 cm in depth. Protons are used to treat areas that overlie tissues which are highly sensitive to radiation. The depth of proton therapy can be precisely controlled. Clues might include the type of tissue being treated, the type of tissue surrounding the affected tissue, and the depth of the tumor to be treated. Proton therapy is less common than photon therapy.

Answer to Question 2

Translocations, inversions, and point deletions are types of genetic mutations. A translocation occurs when segments of two different (nonhomologous) chromosomes are switched (eg, the long arm of chromosome 9 switched with the short arm of chromosome 16). An inversion occurs when a portion of a chromosome is inserted into the correct position in the DNA sequence, only in the opposite orientation (ie, flipped). A point mutation occurs when a DNA base (nucleotide) is substituted for a different base, dropped from the sequence, or another base is inserted into the sequence.
Translocation: t (14q21q), meaning from long arm of 14 to long arm of 21

People who have myopia, or nearsightedness, are not able to see objects at a distance but only up close. It occurs when the cornea is either curved too steeply, the eye is too long, or both. This condition is progressive and worsens with time. More than 100 million people in the United States are nearsighted, but only 20% of those are born with the condition. Diet, eye exercise, drug therapy, and corrective lenses can all help manage nearsightedness.
