Approximately 50 of neonatal mortalities during the first 24 hours of life are attributed to infection. Infection in the neonate can be caused by a variety of agents. Infection may be passed through the placenta to the fetus during pregnancy. Or it may occur due to exposure to organisms present in the vagina during birth or from the environment.
