The nurse should instruct the parents to compress the bulb syringe prior to insertion in the mouth, otherwise the air will be expelled in the mouth and potentially be swallowed. Compressing the bulb syringe following insertion into the nares will force the carbon dioxide in the nares back into the respiratory system. Inserting the bulb syringe approximately 2 to 4 inches into the mouth is too far.
