Increased activity, fussiness, decreased attention are characteristics of the active alertness state of the sleep-wake cycle. Eye fluttering, smiles occasionally, irregular breathing are characteristics of the light-sleep state of the sleep-wake cycle. Intermittent eyelid opening, regular breathing, mild startle movements are characteristics of the drowsiness state of the sleep-wake cycle.

Gingerroot is safe to take during pregnancy. Black cohosh should be avoided during pregnancy, because it can cause uterine contractions. Also, pennyroyal and rue should not be used during pregnancy.
