Answer to Question 1

B
Response:
The mother understands how many hours of sleep her child needs. Routines, such as the same bedtime every night, promote good sleep. However, a horseback ride to bed may cause problems because it may not provide a calming transition from play to sleep; a bath and reading a story would be better. If the child can climb out of a crib, he needs to be in a youth bed or regular bed to avoid injury.

Answer to Question 2

D
Response:
The fact that some tests provide only a probability for developing a disorder is a problem: a serious limitation of these susceptibility tests is that some people who carry a disease-associated mutation will never develop the disease. Choosing appropriate treatments, avoiding having children with fatal diseases, and identifying those at high risk are advantages of genetic testing.

People who have myopia, or nearsightedness, are not able to see objects at a distance but only up close. It occurs when the cornea is either curved too steeply, the eye is too long, or both. This condition is progressive and worsens with time. More than 100 million people in the United States are nearsighted, but only 20% of those are born with the condition. Diet, eye exercise, drug therapy, and corrective lenses can all help manage nearsightedness.
