To prevent toxic shock syndrome, tampons should be changed every 4 hours; peri pads should be used rather than tampons during sleep; diaphragms or cervical caps should never be left in place longer than 24 to 48 hours; hands should be washed before and after inserting anything into the vagina. The lowest-absorbency tampons for adequate control should be used.
