Because the placenta is implanted very low with placenta previa, bleeding is most likely to occur in the last trimester when the cervical os begins to open in preparation for childbirth. Ectopic pregnancy, spontaneous abortion, and hydatidiform mole are identified in early pregnancy (usually in the first trimester).
