This is important for two reasons: first, hydration helps liquefy secretions; second, the mouth-breathing child will have lost a great deal of fluid through insensible loss, which needs to be replaced. All other options are important parts of care of this child; however, hydration is the priority.

African American children have a 60 higher prevalence of asthma, a 260 higher rate of emergency department visits, a 250 higher hospitalization rate, and a 500 higher mortality rate than white children.
