Answer to Question 1

In a placid environment, there is very little change. Businesses that operate in a placid environment can often continue to operate much as they have in the past. Consequently, strategic plans for businesses in these environments can be developed for somewhat longer time periods. By contrast, environmental change is often rapid and unpredictable in a turbulent environment, and businesses operating in these conditions must develop strategic plans for shorter time periods.

Answer to Question 2

A SWOT analysis is an environmental assessment of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats that a business faces. The analysis of strengths and weaknesses has an internal focus. The analysis of opportunities and threats has an external focus.
