Answer to Question 1

C
Each of the dimensions is a column of numbers that is correlated with any other external data. If the correlation is near zero, it means that the new information has nothing to do with that particular dimension; if the correlation is high, the new information is helpful in getting a sense of what that dimension means.

Answer to Question 2

Ordinary least squares (OLS) is a relatively straightforward mathematical technique that guarantees that the resulting straight line will produce the least possible total error in using X to predict Y. The logic is based on how much better a regression line can predict values of Y compared to simply using the mean as a prediction for all observations no matter what the value of X may be. More technically, the OLS procedure generates a straight line that minimizes the sum of squared deviations of the actual values from this predicted regression line.
