Answer to Question 1

A worldwide area division structures operating either by geographical region or by country. Under this model, subsidiaries report directly to the single division responsible for operations in the country or geographic region. While this structure allows for some duplication of activities and thus might increase costs, this organization is considered by managers to be very effective in creating competitive advantage for the firm. A particular advantage of the worldwide area division structure is that it is better equipped to immediately process and respond to country-specific information and conditions than other formal structures -- at some cost to product-related information -- because of its strong regional focus.
