Answer to Question 1

The first step in protecting a brand name is to register the brand (i.e., trademark the brand) in the countries of distribution. Multinational companies can then lobby the U.S. government and other governments in an effort to prevent counterfeiting and piracy. Companies sometimes elect to change the product's appearance to differentiate authentic products from imitations. Frequently, the most successful defense is to work with local governments to attack counterfeiters through raids where counterfeit products may be seized and counterfeit operations closed. This may be found in the Combating Counterfeiting section (9-6b).
