Secondary data is much cheaper than collecting primary data. Even subscription services are comparatively cheap. Internal secondary data is readily available and free and it may offer the company an opportunity to use analogy in the decision making process. Numerous shortcomings of secondary data exist, however. Some secondary data may not be available and those that are available may not be reliable or valid. For example, foreign governments have been known to exaggerate poverty figures in order to simulate international aid or to misreport data in an attempt to project prosperity. This may be found in the Deciding on Information Sources section (6-4c).
