Why would we expect the correlation coefficient for a measure of reliability to be positive?

Because reliability is a measure of consistency, individuals should receive the same score, or close to the same score, each time they take a test, on each half of a test, or on alternate forms of the test. Thus, we would expect the correlation coefficient to be positive, indicating consistency or similar scores. If the correlation were negative, this would not indicate consistency.
