Types of social movements can be classified according to the degree of change they attempt to create. In order of increasing effect, they are: an alternative movement (limited changes in individuals), a redemptive movement (more complete changes in individuals), a reformative movement (partial change in a society), and a revolutionary movement (total change of a society).
