Describe some of the alternatives to prisons in the attempt to rehabilitate criminals.

The boys, coaches, and parents in Fine's research on Little League Baseball

Some alternatives being tried are shock probation (part of the sentence is served in a prison and the rest is suspended, and the criminal placed on probation); community-based programs that reintroduce prisoners into society; and diversion (convicted criminals are sent to community-based programs rather than to prison).
