When a social structure divides into two or more structures, this is termed structural differentiation. The new structures work more efficiently than the previous single structure. As an example, in preindustrial societies, the family and the economic system are essentially one and the same. In industrial societies they are two distinct social institutions, each with its own functions and activities.
