Free from the dominance of adults, peer groups enable young people to experience conflict, competition, and cooperation with each other. Peers can foster independence from adults, and offer young people an opportunity to forge intimate relationships with friends outside of the family. With their peers, adolescents make their own decisions, develop their own ways of thinking, and a self-concept that is separate from parents and family.
