On the same vacation, Gregg Carter and his traveling companion came into the main train depot in Brussels around midnight. The place was almost deserted, and they were worried about finding a cheap place to camp out that night.

Out of the corner of his eye, Gregg caught a glimpse of an American flag; it was embroidered on the back of Levi jacket a young man was wearing. They approached the young man and asked if he had any advice on where to stay. He did. After giving them directions, the three men chatted for a few minutesduring which time they established that the man wearing the Levi jacket had roomed in college in California with the older brother of a girl Gregg had dated in high school in Nevada. This is a classic confirmation of Milgram's small-world research.
