Answer to Question 2

The demographic transition is a three-stage model of population growth in Europe. In the first stage, there is a stable population because both birth and death rates are high The second stage occurs as mortality rates begin to gradually decline, but birth rates remain high. During this stage, there is rapid population growth. In the third stage, once again, there is a stable population as both birth and death rates are low and are more or less balanced. In recent years, a fourth stage as been introduced by some Anti-Malthusians. In this stage, there is population shrinkage because the deaths start to outnumber the births in a country.
