Answer to Question 1

The owner of stock in a company is a part-owner of the company. Most people who own stock also work for someone else, so they share characteristics with both the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. By pooling their resources, stockholders (who are also workers) can greatly influence the direction a corporation takes in business. The fact that there are a number of worker-owned and worker-controlled corporations demonstrates the overlap between members of the bourgeoisie and members of the proletariat.

Answer to Question 2

In every society of the world, gender is a basis for social stratification. It is not the sole basis for stratifying people in any society, but it cuts across all systems of social stratification  slavery, caste, estate, class. In every society, men's earning are higher than women's earnings. Most of the world's illiterate are females. Of the several hundred million adults who cannot read, about two-thirds are women. (As mentioned in other chapters, in certain geographic areas in which the control of females by males is more evident, practices involving coercion of child brides, child prostitutes, and female circumcision are common.)
