 Average income level affects a local community's quality of schooling. Schools enrolling well-off students spend much more money per student than schools in low-income communities.
 On average, high school students from families earning more than 200,000 per year score 388 points higher on the combined SAT than those from families with incomes below 20,000 per year.
 During the school year, high-income children learn somewhat faster than low-income children. But the gap grew the widest during the summer months, when children spend the most time in their home environment.
 While the dropout rate is 4.3 percent for non-Hispanic whites, the rate is 7.5 percent among non-Hispanic African Americans, 12.7 percent among Latinos, and 13.0 percent among Native Americans.
