Answer to Question 1

In 2012, the median pay for men working full time was 49,398; women working full time earned 37,791, or 77 percent as much.
The gender gap in earnings means that women are more likely to be at the low end of the income scale.
Most women who share a household with a man depend on his earnings. For this reason, after separation, divorce, or the partner's death, a woman's income may fall dramatically. Especially if she has young children, the loss of a partner's income may cause financial hardship and raise her risk of falling into poverty.
