Answer to Question 1

Answer: d

Answer to Question 2

Based on years of study of crime in cities, sociologists and urban planners have come to recognize that architecture and urban design play a part in the crime problem. These policy analysts have developed a new approach to designing cities that has come to be called the defensible space strategy because it focuses on changes in the physical environment that make it easier for neighborhoods and communities to defend themselves against crime. This approach is based on the recognition that many criminals are, to a degree, rational; they calculate how they can obtain the greatest gain for the least risk. As the likelihood of getting caught increases, criminals either commit crimes somewhere else or avoid committing crimes. In addition, many neighborhoods and buildings in cities are designed in such a way that they discourage social interaction and social participation on the part of residents. They isolate people from one another, which tends to increase the opportunities for criminals to operate unobserved. So, the defensible space strategy designs locations so that intruders believe that they will be observed, be identified, and have difficulty escaping if they commit a crime.
