Answer to Question 1

Men are far more likely to become alcoholics than women. This is due in part to the fact that alcohol consumption and drunkenness have been more socially acceptable for men than for women.

Answer to Question 2

People with an alcoholic parent are as much as six times more likely to become alcoholic themselves, even when raised apart from their biological parents in a nonalcoholic family. However, one very important point is that 60 to 65 percent of alcoholics do not exhibit this genetic link, and some alcoholics with the genetic link only became heavy drinkers under certain environmental conditions.
