Answer to Question 1

The white Anglo-Saxon Protestants (WASPs) were among the earliest European immigrants to North America. They were sufficiently fearful of people from other racial and ethnic groups who immigrated after themfrom places such as Ireland, Italy, and Eastern Europethat they attempted to Americanize them rather than let them build their own social institutions and way of life. They promoted a concept called Anglo conformity in which immigrants were required to renounce their ancestral culture in favor of the beliefs, values, and lifestyle of the dominant WASPs to realize the American dream.

Answer to Question 2

The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), now part of the Department of the Interior, has conservation as its prime directive rather than economic development. This deemphasis of economic matters has contributed to the problems of American Indians by making it more difficult for them to improve their economic position.
