Answer to Question 1

For the most part, children tend to take jobs that are not too different in socioeconomic status from those of their parents. Furthermore, children of the affluent have much greater access to a good education, which has become a key requirement for success.

Answer to Question 2

The existence of poverty ensures that society's dirty work will be done. Poverty subsidizes many of the activities of the more affluent because the poor are willing to work for low wages. It also creates jobs for all those people who serve the poor, such as social workers, or who protect society from them, such as police and corrections officers.
