Choose a subject area and a topic from the level at which you would most like to teach. For example, you could design a fourth grade math lesson about fractions. Create and describe instructional activities that emphasize memorization and recall of factual information as well as each of the abilities that Sternberg associates with intelligence in his triarchic theory. Suggest at least one activity for each of the abilities.

Table 4.2 in the text provides a series of examples that are illustrative of appropriate responses to this item. In general, tasks involving memory ability emphasize recall of factual information; analytical tasks require analysis, comparisons, and judgments; creative tasks involve invention and imagining; practical tasks are about putting ideas into practice.

Atkinson maintains that high-need achievers prefer moderately challenging tasks because they offer a balance between challenge and expected success.
