Assume that a debate could be held between proponents of equity theory and expectancy theory. How would each representative respond to the proposition that money is the most effective way of motivating performance?

Equity theorists would argue that to motivate employees, pay must be tied to performance and salary information should be open. If salaries are kept confidential, employees cannot make accurate comparisons and the perception of inequity will increase. To motivate performance, expectancy theory claims that performance must be linked to pay (instrumentality) and the employees must desire more pay (valence).
