The global business world often judges management primarily on protecting the firm's bottom line. Hence, it may be easy to be socially responsible in a prospering economy but more difficult when the economy is bad.

There is a growing recognition among leading global CSR organizations that the first 15 years of CSR efforts have produced mixed results, and that significant changes will have to be made if CSR is to be anything more than an expensive exercise in reputational management. Dan Rees, director of the UK's Ethical Trading Initiative, said, CSR in general has become a bit of a victim of its own hypewe have to stop pretending that companies in and of themselves can on their own transform industrial relations in foreign lands. However, a recent study does not fully support these conclusions.
