A hypothesis indicates that the researcher has sufficient knowledge in the area to undertake the investigation and the hypothesis gives direction to the collection of the data. A well-grounded hypothesis may save the researcher a great deal of time and effort.

A smoker who is required to write a report documenting the health risks of smoking will change their attitudes toward smoking.
