People tend to distort their memories. For example, just saying something has happened to you makes you more likely to think it really happened. This is true whether the event happened or not. These distortions tend to occur in seven specific ways, which Schacter refers to as the seven sins of memory.. They include transience; absent-mindedness; blocking; misattribution; suggestibility; bias; and persistence.

Eyewitness testimony may be the most common source of wrongful convictions in the United States. Of the first 180 cases in the United States in which convicts were exonerated through the use of DNA evidence, more than three-quarters involved eyewitness errors. Whatever may be the validity of eyewitness testimony for adults, it clearly is suspect for children.

What a consultant emphasized would depend on the side for which he or she was testifying.
