Maintenance may not be a term that is really appropriate for software, but what it implies is unavoidable: things changes and software that is already in use must be fixed, upgraded, or replaced. Maintenance becomes necessary for a variety of reasons, including engineering defects, failures in analysis and design, obsolescence, change of requirements and expectations, and competition.
