The OSI reference model is a standard protocol for digital communication that consists of seven recommended layers of recommended functions. It is used by suppliers to make sure their products are interconnectable.
Layer 1  Physical Layer  defines the physical connection to a network
Layer 2  Logical Link Layer  makes sure that no data is garbled
Layer 3  Network Layer  addresses and routes packets
Layer 4  Transport Layer  controls flow, ensures reliable packet delivery
Layer 5  Session Layer  Controls dialog, acts as a moderators for a session
Layer 6  Presentation Layer  translates data to and from language in the application layer
Layer 7  Application Layer  provides an interface to the application
