First, successful Infrared transmission requires an unobstructed line-of-sight capability between the sender and receiver, meaning that walls and partitions can prevent a communication from occurring. Secondly, Infrared is limited in terms of the data rates that it can support, making it inefficient for such bandwidth intensive data as video.
