Answer to Question 1

RAID drive arrays are often based upon SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) technology. More expensive RAID drive arrays have a backplane. This backplane provides power to the hard drives, and also connects the drives directly to the unit's SCSI bus, such that separate cables are not required. For an added expense, RAID drive arrays can also support hot swappable drives. The advantage of a hot swappable drive is that it can be removed or inserted without powering down the RAID unit. This means that if one of the hard drives in the array fails, the failing drive can be replaced without taking down the entire array.

Answer to Question 2

One of the most commonly used storage technologies used for improved performance, reliability, and recoverability is called a Redundant Array of Inexpensive Devices, or RAID. RAID is also sometimes referred to as a Redundant Array of Independent Devices, or simply as a Drive Array.
