Answer to Question 1

The advantage comes from the efficiencies that a SAN, as a separate network, can bring to storage access and retrieval. The disadvantage comes primarily from the initial cost and complexity of setting up the SAN infrastructure. As with any business solution, the decision of whether to use a SAN will be based on how cost-effective and efficient a SAN would be for the organization.

Answer to Question 2

Off-line refers to resources that are not immediately available but that could be made available in a reasonable amount of time (i.e., less than a minute). Data that are immediately available are said to be online.
