Answer to Question 2

A
Using tools such as clinical guidelines may help reduce variations in care and has the potential to
increase efficiency. Practice protocols are no substitution for the need to assess each patient's unique
individual needs and variations with the care. Using practice protocols may have an influence on
reducing waste; however, reducing waste does not necessarily produce better patient care. Practice
protocols are not used primarily to reduce the number of inpatient care days.
