A major source of violence against nurses is horizontal, or lateral, violence from other nurses. Horizontal violence consists of antagonistic behaviors as a result of historical, geographic, gend-er-related, and workplace-related issues. The behaviors may include gossip, innuendo (verbal and nonverbal), scapegoating, passive-aggressiveness, disrespecting privacy, and bullying (Walrafen et al., 2012; Weinand, 2010).

Bullying involves aggressive or destructive behavior or psychological harassment of a recipient who is in a position of power differential with the perpetrator (the head nurse). Bullying is closely related to lateral or horizontal violence and involves such behaviors as incivility or inti-midation.
