An ICU manager learns that the current staff are tired of working overtime. Which option should the manager take to influence the staffs morale?
 
  1. Pull nurses from other nursing units.
  2. Rotate day shift staff to night shift positions temporarily.
  3. The manager should work some of the open shifts.
  4. The manager should hire a staff nurse consultant.

Question 2

An OB manager is reviewing the units turnover rate. The unit has had a 50 percent turnover rate in the past year. The units overtime costs have increased significantly in the past year. How can the manager retain the current staff?
 
  1. Consult with the other nursing managers.
  2. Consult human resources to conduct a survey of those nurses who have left and the current staff.
  3. Increase the current nurses wages.
  4. Increase the opportunity for overtime.

Explanation: 1. Pulling nurses from other units may not be an option since the OB department is a specialized
nursing unit. Day shift nurses typically have more seniority than night shift nurses. Requiring
day shift nurses to work night shift may cause an increase in nurse turnover. The manager has
already consulted with HR and has learned that staff are tired of the overtime. Decreasing the
amount of overtime and the managers ability to work alongside staff will affect morale.

Explanation: 1. Discussing the matter with other managers may assist in an attempt to discover the issues but
surveying current staff and staff that have left within the past year will provide the manager
with information regarding the units issues. Increasing wages is a short-term solution and
may cause discord among other nurses within the organization. Staff already have the
opportunity for overtime.
