When interacting with the older child, using the concept of mutuality will promote respect and should foster more positive and lasting health care outcomes. Being authentic does not mean being overly familiar. Trying to interact with older children and adolescents as though the nurse is a buddy is confusing to the client. What the child wants is an emotionally available, calm, caring, competent resource that can protect, care about, and above all, listen to him or her.
