A nurse who practices in rural settings has many challenges. The characteristics of nursing practice in rural environments include:
 
  1. Variety/diversity in clinical experiences
  2. Faster pace
  3. Less independence/autonomy
  4. Abundant resources

Question 2

A move to specialty certification was pursued in 2000 but has not been successful due to lack of sufficient applicants and adequate financial resources. In addition:
 
  1. Parish nurses do not follow the American Nurses Association guidelines for prac-tice.
  2. Parish nurses use complementary and alternative therapies in their work that do not require certification.
  3. There is a question about the need for certification since parish nurses do not work in health care facilities.
  4. Clergymen and parishioners see no need for certification.
