Surveillance data pertain to the occurrence of specific diseases, the analysis and interpretation of these data, and the dissemination of information about the data. Vital statistics are legal data; however, legality does not guarantee validity. The major deficiency of this category of data for epidemiologic research purposes is the possible incompleteness of population coverage.
