Answer to Question 1

ANS: A
The fact that studies are not replicated and then published is problematic because a knowledge base is not being developed.
It is not necessary to replicate studies to learn research, although it can provide good lessons if the original research was well done.
Most people would not consider this a true statement.
People hear about research when it is published or presented. It really does not have to do with whether it is a replicated study or not.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: C
Ensuring all patients receive the standard of care is the best option available; often there is a procedure in place that all subjects can receive, leaving the experimental group to get the treatment under question, or the experimental treatment.
Statistical control of variables can be used for some things, but cannot take the place of assigning treatment and control groups.
In some cases a placebo treatment is considered nothing and would not be approved by the institutional review board.
Using other research designs as often as possible would limit the use of more powerful statistical analysis and make studies not as generalizable.

There are major differences in the metabolism of morphine and the illegal drug heroin. Morphine mostly produces its CNS effects through m-receptors, and at k- and d-receptors. Heroin has a slight affinity for opiate receptors. Most of its actions are due to metabolism to active metabolites (6-acetylmorphine, morphine, and morphine-6-glucuronide).

Automated pill dispensing systems have alarms to alert patients when the correct dosing time has arrived. Most systems work with many varieties of medications, so patients who are taking a variety of drugs can still be in control of their dose regimen.

Most strokes are caused when blood clots move to a blood vessel in the brain and block blood flow to that area. Thrombolytic therapy can be used to dissolve the clot quickly. If given within 3 hours of the first stroke symptoms, this therapy can help limit stroke damage and disability.
