Answer to Question 1

Many scholars have pointed to the importance of oil in understanding the
causes of the Biafran War. The majority Ibo territory of Biafra in the southeast included
the oil-rich region of the Niger Delta, where the vast majority of Nigeria's oil deposits
are located. The potential revenues from oil made violent conflict more likely in at least
two ways.
First, oil made it more likely that Biafra could be economically viable as a state
independent from Nigeria, making secession a more attractive option for regional
leaders.
Second, oil was already seen as a vital source of revenue for the central government,
making Biafran secession unacceptable, and increasing the government's willingness to
fight over the territory.
