Answer to Question 1

As industrialization advanced, two new economic groups emerged: the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. Bourgeoisie is an economic class of wealthy capitalists that emerged during the Industrial Revolution and invested in factories and businesses. Proletariat is an economic class of wage laborers who worked in factories that emerged during the Industrial Revolution. Marx understood that industrialization meant that landowners would grow relatively weaker, while both the bourgeoisie and the proletariat would grow stronger. As both these new economic groups grew, politics would increasingly turn into conflicts between these two groups.

Answer to Question 2

Political identity refers to the ways in which individuals categorize themselves and others, and how they understand the power relationships of domination and oppression that exist between groups. Identity involves both our own perceptions of how we fit in, and others' perceptions of how we fit in. Its importance lies not simply with recognizing that you fit into this or that group, but in recognizing the political significance of your membership in or exclusion from certain social groups.
