Why did the framers of the Constitution create a limited electoral system, as opposed to one that more strictly adhered to democratic ideals?

1, Explain that during the primaries, Senator Eugene McCarthy and Senator Robert F. Kennedy both campaigned while Vice President Hubert Humphrey did not.
2, Point out that the incumbent president, Lyndon Johnson, dropped out of the race after disappointing primary results, and Senator Kennedy was assassinated during the campaign.
3, Explain that the Democratic Party leaders gave the nomination to Humphrey rather than McCarthy.
4, Discuss the significance of not campaigning during the primaries and receiving the presidential nomination for the general election.
