Answer to Question 1

An individual belongs to both the mother's and the father's lineages depending on the social function; matrilineal and patrilineal descent groups have different functions.

Answer to Question 2

Because the father is not in the same matrilineage as his own son, the relationship tends to be easy and affectionate. The father does not have authority over his son in a matrilineage. His wife's brother does.
