2. The United Nations distinguishes indigenous people on the basis of geographic originality.
3. One reason their way of life may be threatened is that they often live in areas targeted by extractive industries.
4. Another example is the negative effects of pressure to switch from traditional crops to cash crops.
5. State governments often forcibly displace indigenous people for economic purposes and resist efforts to recognize their rights.

1. A life project is defined as local people's definition of the direction they want to take in life, informed by their knowledge, history, and context.
2. In being defined by the affected group itself, instead of by outsiders, the benefits of any project are more likely to go to the local population rather than to the outsiders.
3. Traditional development projects are typically not informed by local interests and instead serve the interests of the external funders/donors.
